The Navajo Nation Department of Retirement Services (NNDRS) is established to provide the employees of the Navajo Nation, and participating affiliates, including participating certified chapters, with timely, competitive, and financially secure retiremer benefits. Services include the provision of orientations and presentations on the Defined Benefit Plan, Defined Contribution Plan, and Deferred Compensation Plan.

NNDRS is available to assist retirees and beneficiaries with issues related to their retirement benefit. Addtional support is provided to eligible political-at-will employees, political appointees, elected officials of the Navajo Nation Council, and the President and Vice President of the Navajo Nation under the Deferred Compensation Plan. The Department of Retirement Services administers the following three retirement plans:

  1. Defined Benefit Plan: Navajo Nation Regular Retirement Plan for employees, political appointees, judges, and elected officials of the Navajo Nation Government; a qualified governmental plan in accordance with the Internal Revenue Code.
  2. Defined Contribution Plan: Navajo Nation 401(k) Savings Plan for employees, political appointees and elected officials of the Navajo Nation Council; a qualified governmental plan in accordance with the Internal Revenue Code.
  3. Deferred Compensation: A nonqualified retirement plan for political appointees and elected officials of the Navajo Nation Council.

Mission

The Navajo Nation Department of Retirement Services is to provide quality retirement services to the employees of the Navajo Nation and its participating entities through appropriate retirement plans for the various employment statuses. Our ultimate responsibility is to provide competitive pension benefits to encourage employees to continue to work for the Navajo Nation for the benefits of the Navajo People.

Goals

  • Provide courteous customer service.
  • Increase Navajo Nation Employee’s awareness and knowledge of retirement services and benefits.
  • The Continuing Service Records of all Navajo Nation Employees shall be kept up-to-date.
  • Increase the number of Navajo Nation Employees enrolled in the 401(k) Savings Plan.
  • Increase the number of Navajo Nation Employees contributing at least 6% to their 401(k) Savings Plan.
